When Stars Align

Who was able to catch any of the Hope for Haiti concert on almost every cable network last night? It seemed kind of a strange time to air a two-hour telathon/concert, simply for the fact that many would probably rather be out at 8:00 EST on a Friday night that sitting on their couches watching television.  But either way, the lines seemed to be ringing for the entire duration of the event, and apparently long into the night as many of the celebrity guests remained on duty to man the telephones.

I haven’t seen any figures on donations yet, but I must say that the portions of the broadcast that included testimonials from both earthquake survivors and  Haitian-American citizens with friends and relatives in the country were among the most compelling requests for donations I have seen thus far.

George Clooney, who organized the event, managed to bring together over 100 of his famous friends from film and music, along with former President Bill Clinton and a handful of other politicians and television personalities for a night of collective purpose.

Among those in attendance were Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Clint Eastwood, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Anderson Cooper, Samuel Jackson, Steven Spielberg, and Denzel Washington.

Performers included Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, U2, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crowe, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Sting, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Jay-Z,  Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Beyonce, The Edge, and a finale performance by Haitian-born  artist, Wyclef Jean.

Here are some highlights from the event.
